Political Comments 1968
PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES 1968
It was a violable time in 1968. I was in my radical Hippie period. Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers and Robert Kennedy had all been assassinated. President Johnson had decided not to run again for the office. There had been riots in our cities over civil rights and George Wallace was running as a third party representative of segregation forever.
This was a doodle I made of the 1968 Presidential candidates with some sarcastic comments I attributed to each. changed?
What we need...and remember...I told you and if Alger Hiss ever...Of course we have to being me and after
Hubert H. Humphrey
I hear a lot about America losing faith, and say baloney. It has faith just as I when I started the Peace Corp., the Job Corp., and the Declaration of Independence.
President Lyndon B. Johnson
President Lyndon B. Johnson
My place in history is assured by Sam Rayburn and all the saints. Ah was the best president Vietnam ever had.
Eugene McCarthy
The people need a forum. The people? Don't they count?
Robert F. Kennedy
(On Tombstone)
Here lies Robert Kennedy and the American Dream. "No sadder words ever penned then it might have been."
George Wallace
All ah want to do is bring back the America of the individuals. Git the gov't out of everything and give them pseudo-intellectuals a bath and haircut and send them to Vietnam. Then the negras can laugh again and be happy heah on my plantation.
On the back of this drawing I had written this poem:
Hooray for the red, white and gray.
The red blood claimed in freedom's name.
The white of the whitewash
In the politician's mouth.
Gray of the people.
Dave C. ARCo 1964
Dave Claypoole was a friend in the early 'sixties and we worked together at Atlantic Refining Company through the period it was becoming ARCo. had drove a Triumph sports car and had great stories of when he was a meter man for a utility company. It was Dave who told me about evening college and persuaded me to try it.

Last of the Tatters
Mugs is the last of what is in Tatters. It isn't by The Kid. It's by Jean O'Heaney. Somewhere The Kid has other sketches and artwork stashed, but The Old Goat haven't come across it. If he does there will be another volume to display. I know the Kid did drawings of animals and objects.

The Cat is Dead!
The Vilanova versus St. John's rivalry goes back a long way. I am not certain exactly which year I did this. or for what reason. Was this their regular season match up, a tournament or a championship I am commenting on? Don't know.
I will take a guess it was drawn in 1964. Villanova was ranked number 8 in that year's NIT, but lost to unranked St. John's. The only thing making this particular game stand out was St. John's had a "legendary" couch named Joe Lapchick, who retired that season and the win over Villanova was called a retirement gift to him.
Don't remember the significance of the bird up in the left hand corner either.

When I Was a Child I had Some Crayons...
"Dad - 1965" by The Kid
When I was a child I had many interests. My third grade teacher influenced an interest in writing. Around the same time I was also encouraged toward art.
Believe it or not, this painting here depicting riders of an early passenger train being stung by hot ash from the engine was hung on display. I must have been 10 years old. I was much better at doing charcoal trees, but none of those have survived.
In my later teens I studied commercial art. I didn't do too badly at first, but by the end my grades were slipping from A's to B's. I dropped out after two years. For one, I couldn't see myself drawing pots and pans for some department store catalog and I didn't think I was good enough to compete professionally anyway. Besides, my real interest was in cartooning, not hardware illustration.
I was inspired in this direction from years of reading the "Saturday Evening Post" cartoons and Peanuts by Charles Schulz (who was revolutionizing the comic strip in the 1950s). I did my own two series in those teen years: Hector's Hectic Life (one panel cartoons) and Who's Who at the Psycho Zoo? (comic strip).
SAMPLES FROM EACH
Lost dog? May I be of help?
All Aliens Must Register.
I really didn't pursue my sketching after I became an adult. I guess I got too busy with other things. My middle child is a artist better than I. She had work displayed in three shows and I hope she stays at it.
"Number crunchers are good for your figures" by Noelle. This is supposed to be me, although I did not work for a firm called Prod, Malign and Grumble, Inc., I was sometimes an accountant. She was around twelve when she did this in MousePaint on the computer.
She painted on the walls...and we let her. She had painted two murals in her bedroom as a young teen. One was a tennis match and the other the crew from Star Trek. I wish I had taken a photo of these. She painted over them when she got older.
